What You Need To Know In 5 Minutes

There are five basic types of strollers available, including umbrella, double, jogging, car seat and full-featured travel systems. Travel system strollers make sense for most first time parents, offering features others provide in a single package. Unless you’re having twins, it’s the right choice for everyday use.

What to Look For

“Easy” is the most important word you want when describing strollers. Managing an infant is enough work in itself, so your stroller needs to be easy to open, close and operate. Look for those with narrower wheelbases to make it easy to maneuver through sometimes-cramped shopping aisles and other corridors. This also ensures the stroller will fit easier into your car truck and hall closet.

Many strollers offer five-point harnesses for anxious parents. This pertains to the car-seat section of the stroller. The base only needs a three-point harness for pushing the stroller on foot. Make sure the stroller allows you to lean the seating area back so your child can nap while you are strolling. The ability to pull a canopy over the seating area is important for your child’s sun protection.

While getting a sturdy, well-built stroller is important, it’s hard to find both strong and lightweight construction in the same product. Both are important features, so find a balance of weight and structure that works for your price range.

Understand that kids can get very big very quickly. You shouldn't need the stroller after your child turns three years old, but a three year old can grow as big as your average five year old before you are ready to stop using the stroller. Look for weight ratings of 50 pounds to ensure your child doesn't outgrow the stroller.

Before You Buy

To be certain you choose the right stroller, do a search on the manufacturer’s website for the manual covering the model you will buy. Double check the weight ratings are the same as showing in the product listing. Also, make sure you can return the stroller if it's not what you had in mind, without paying shipping if possible. Strollers are heavy and return shipping is expensive.

Brands and Pricing

Expect to pay about $100 for a stroller that converts to fit all your travel needs. If you need a sport stroller, expect to pay closer to $200. The best affordable brands include Graco, Baby Trend, Evenflo and Safety 1st. Overall, Evenflo strollers tend to run heavier than the rest, without offering other benefits to counter balance this downfall.
