What You Need To Know In 5 Minutes

Every expecting parent needs a crib for the impending arrival. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) sets standards for cribs sold in the United States, allowing American parents to be reasonably certain that the one they choose will be safe. Unfortunately, mistakes do happen, so parents must be vigilant about registering the crib they choose and checking for recalls. New safety standards were just issued in 2011 because of several recalls on drop-side cribs, so buying new is the safest bet.

Drop Sides Can Be Dangerous

Drop sides can be helpful for accessing your young one in the morning, but they aren’t necessary and can be dangerous if the dropping mechanism fails. These cribs are also much harder to assemble correctly, creating an additional risk of injury for your child. For an affordable crib that you can trust to be safe, skip this feature.

Adjustable Height

Adjustable height cribs allow parents to raise the height of the mattress, bringing smaller babies closer to parents reach. Most cribs come with this feature, but it adds the danger that parents may forget to adjust the level down as the baby learns to sit up and crawl. Parents who choose adjustable height cribs should be vigilant about adjusting the height down as the baby becomes mobile.

Convertible Cribs Cut Costs

The best cribs are convertible, allowing you to transform them into toddler beds when the baby is old enough to transition to a bed. While the feature adds a little to the cost of the crib, it is still cheaper than buying a toddler bed after you have already paid for a regular crib. In most cases, the same hardware included to put the crib together will also work to convert the crib to a toddler bed.

Keep It Simple

The simpler the crib, the better. Extra features like decorative cutouts add to the cost without improving functionality. A simple crib with a snug fitting mattress is really all you need.

Understand that most cribs do not come with the mattress. Check the dimensions of the crib interior to be sure you can find a snug fitting mattress as recommended by safety experts.

Many cribs come with wheels that let you move the crib about the room. Don’t pay extra for this feature. Wheels won’t allow you to maneuver the crib outside the room since cribs are wider than standard doorways. In addition, wheels make it easier for the baby to wiggle the crib around as she becomes mobile, creating a hazard. If the model you choose comes with wheels, don’t install them.

Brands and Pricing

Dream On Me offers several affordable cribs for a little over $100. DaVinici is another affordable brand. Graco is a well-known brand for children’s products that will cost a bit more than the others mentioned, but you shouldn’t have to pay more than $200 for a quality crib.
