What You Need To Know In 5 Minutes

Dentists recommend electric toothbrushes for cleaner teeth with each brushing, resulting in less plaque buildup and easier dental cleanings. Many people don’t realize the enormous difference an electric toothbrush makes in the health of your teeth and gums. The health benefits are well worth the extra cost of an electric toothbrush over standard.

Oscillating or Sonic?

Electric toothbrushes can use sonic vibrating technology or oscillating movements with rotating heads. Your dentist may recommend one technology over the other. However, there are no good studies on which technology works better. Even in a study by Oral-B maker Proctor & Gamble, sonic brushes only slightly out-performed oscillating. Given the high cost of most sonic toothbrushes and replacement heads, oscillating models are your best bet. Don’t be misled by oscillating battery-powered toothbrushes. They are not as powerful, nor do they clean as well as rechargeable models.

Replacement Heads

Just as standard toothbrushes must be replaced every three to six months, electric toothbrush heads require replacement. Choosing a well-known brand of electric toothbrush ensures you can get replacement heads when you need them. Be sure to check on the cost of replacement heads before you buy a toothbrush. It makes little sense to get a good deal on the toothbrush only to overpay for them.

Bells and Whistles

Dentists recommend spending a full two minutes at every brushing. Some brushes come with timers to help you achieve this, beeping at 30-second intervals so you know when to switch brushing to another section of your mouth. You probably already have a handy timer around the house, such as a kitchen timer or the timer on your smart phone. For this reason, it doesn’t make sense to pay extra for this feature.

You can also find models specially designed for sensitive teeth, gum massaging or tooth whitening. You may even find some equipped with pressure sensors so you can avoid brushing too hard. Others will remind you when the brush head needs replacing. The problem with all of these features, useful as they may be, is the extra cost they can add to an already significant investment. All you really need is a rechargeable electric toothbrush.

Brands and Pricing

Oral-B is by far the biggest name in affordable oscillating electric toothbrushes. Conair has dabbled in this space by partnering with Interplak. Spinbrush is another affordable model that hit the market just a few years ago. By choosing oscillating over sonic, you can expect to spend under $50 for a reliable electric toothbrush.
