What You Need To Know In 5 Minutes

Resistance training is an important part of a sound overall fitness program.  Taking part in some form of regular resistance training can help build lean muscle and help you reach your health and fitness goals in a shorter amount of time than just cardiovascular training alone.  Unfortunately much of the traditional resistance training equipment on the market is expensive and takes up a lot of floor space which puts people who live in small homes or apartments or those who are in a budget in a tough spot when it comes to putting together a fully stocked and functional home gym. This is where resistance bands can come in handy.  A good set of quality resistance bands delivers the resistance you need to perform a wide variety of different exercises to get a full body strength workout without a large investment and without taking up any space in your home at all.

What to Look for

Consistency – a good set of resistance bands will provide a smooth and steady resistance throughout the entire exercise just like free weights.  While lower quality bands might feel “heavier” at the beginning of each movement and provide less resistance as they extend through an exercise, a good pair will feel consistent from the beginning of the movement until the end.

Durability – resistance bands can take the place of free weights and machines, but only if they are built to last.  Low quality bands can lose some of their “spring” over time which can have a negative impact on your workouts.  In order for a set of resistance bands to be effective they need to continue to provide a high, consistent level of resistance so you can continue to make progress and improve fitness with each workout.  A low quality band may also snap during use which can create a much worse situation than a poor workout – you might pay a couple dollars more for a good set of bands but it is critical for a good workout and for your safety.

Features You Don’t Need

Resistance bands are simple in concept and don’t need to be too fancy to be effective.  You don’t necessarily need things like door attachments, ankle cuffs and removable/reattaching handles that will most certainly drive up the price of the equipment.

Variety is another big consideration when you are looking at resistance bands.  You can buy resistance bands individually, but you get more bang for your buck by buying a set of bands with multiple resistances.  When going this route you want to make sure that you get a decent variety of resistances that will allow you to work your entire body effectively and that you won’t outgrow too quickly.

You can expect to pay anywhere from $25.00 to $40.00 for a good, high quality set of bands.  The top brands in this price range are SPRI, ProSource, Black Mountain, Bodylastics and Aylio.

Comfort should also be taken into account when you are hunting for a good at home gym option.  While working out isn’t normally the most comfortable thing in the world you do want your equipment to be comfortable to use.  Make sure the bands you choose have handles that feel good in a variety of positions so you can make it through long grueling workouts and ultimately reach your fitness goals.
