What You Need To Know In 5 Minutes

As any great wine connoisseur knows, proper storage temperature is key to maintaining your wine's integrity and flavor composition. But maintaining a proper temperature requires much more than simply throwing the bottle into the refrigerator or liquor cabinet. The best storage temperature for wine is actually between 45 and 65 degrees. If your wine is stored in temperatures above 70 degrees the drink will age more quickly, and if it's stored too low, the cork will likely dry out allowing air to seep in and damage the flavor.

If you want to preserve your fine wine longer, then it would be wise to invest in your very own wine cooler, also known as a wine refrigerator or a wine fridge.

The most important part to storing wine is to keep it at a constant temperature. Because regular refrigerators tend to vary in their internal holding temperature, a wine cooler is a better option for this.

Choose a cooler that has a temperature control feature so that you can store various kinds of wine at their optimum temperature. This may come in the form of a dial, but these tend to be less accurate than digital models.

Aside from holding a constant temperature, a  quality wine cooler will have many additional features that you may or may not find important. Some of these features include:

  • Lockable Doors: These models are very important for those of us with small children at home. Though hardly necessary if everyone in your home is over 21 years old, the ability to block a curious three-year-old from getting her hands on your wine is worth investing in.
  • Interior Lighting: Many people like to be able to display their wine rather than just hold it. For this reason, most wine refrigerators will come with internal LED lighting that will illuminate your wine for all to see.
  • Quiet Design: Some wine coolers are significantly more quiet than others. Though a silent feature will likely only be beneficial if your cooler is located in a bedroom or media room, it certainly is not always necessary.
  • Double-pained door: This feature is most important if your wine cooler will be exposed to the sun. The double-pained doors help protect your wine from harmful UV Rays while allowing you to still view your selection.
  • Eco-Friendly: For the environmentalist in you, an Eco-Friendly design may be important. These coolers do not use dangerous refrigerants but rather use thermoelectric cooling technology instead.
  • Reversible door opening: Many refrigerators and wine coolers feature a reversible door opening. This is handy for situations in which you've only got space to open your door in one direction, but does not directly influence of the effectiveness of the product itself.
  • Carbon Filtration: This feature is important if you plan on storing your wine for many years. It acts as a barrier to odors that can ruin the taste of wine, which means your wine will be better preserved for many more years.
  • Removable Shelving: Removable shelving is important if you plan on purchasing bottles larger than the average size of 750 ml.

Wines age at different rates depending on the temperature in which they are stored. For optimum results, it is recommended that you store white wines such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc between the temperatures of 45 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit and red wines such as Merlot and Siraz between 50 and 55 degrees. Though some coolers offer two cooling zones, if you plan on storing multiple types of wine, you can still do so using a single-zone cooler. This is because the biggest issue with preserving wines is not the specific temperature, but rather the ability to hold a constant temperature.

The highest quality wine coolers for the price are by brands such as EdgeStar, Wine Enthusiast and Nostalgia Electric. These companies continue to build quality wine refrigeration systems and their customers all seem very pleased with the product.

We do not, however, recommend purchasing a wine cooler by VinoTemp. Their high price does not match the short lifespan of their coolers and should therefore be avoided.

All too often, wine is damaged because of improper storage. See that this does not happen to yours with the purchase of a high-quality, low-cost wine cooler.
